What do I wear? How do I prepare? What to Wear and Bring To ensure your comfort and safety during your activity, we recommend wearing clothes that are comfortable, durable, and suitable for getting dirty or wet. Please dress in layers to accommodate a range of temperatures. Shoes: Closed-toe shoes with a sturdy sole are required. Sandals are not permitted, as they restrict your ability to interact with the horses (you will need to remain outside the arena if wearing sandals). Additional Items: We suggest bringing sunscreen, a sun hat, sunglasses, and water to stay comfortable throughout the session. No Experience Required You do not need any prior experience with horses to participate in equine-assisted psychotherapy. All of our horses are trained to work with individuals in the round pen. However, it’s important to treat the horses with respect and be mindful of your personal space at all times.

Is horse riding involved? All of our sessions are ground-based (un-mounted). If you're interested in learning horsemanship, we incorporate that into our therapy sessions and Equine Assisted Learning activities. For equestrian riding lessons, we can recommend a qualified instructor in the community.

Do I need to have a Wellness Ranch therapist in order to attend an equine assisted therapy session?Equine-assisted psychotherapy can be an effective stand-alone treatment. If you're already engaged in traditional therapy, it can also serve as a powerful complement to your in-office sessions.

How is the horse part of the therapy team?Horses, with their gentle nature and acceptance of humans, play a vital role in personal development, emotional healing, and self-discovery. They offer unconditional companionship, experience a wide range of emotions, and provide immediate, honest feedback based on our interactions. As part of the therapeutic team, our horses, Thunder and Rein, bring a unique perspective due to their sensitivity to nonverbal cues, making them highly intuitive guides. Their social nature helps us better understand group dynamics and the roles we play in our everyday lives. This unique approach allows individuals to gain valuable insights about themselves and others through hands-on interaction with the horses, followed by reflection on their feelings, behaviors, and patterns.
